The mission of the Department of Economic and Housing Development is to create economic opportunity for Newark residents and enhance the vibrancy of our city. To this end, the department seeks to position Newark to take advantage of its unique assets, including its strategic location, a diverse and underutilized workforce, a large amount of developable land, concentration of corporate and business service firms, several major universities, and a wealth of arts and cultural assets.

How to Purchase City Owned Property

Foreclosure and Vacant Property Owner Registration

In order to comply with the Newark Foreclosure and Vacant Property Registration Ordinance(s), ALL Owners/Mortgagees/Trustees must register online and pay a registration fee. The City of Newark is administering the Foreclosure Property and Vacant Private-Owner Property Registration program(s).

OFFICE OF AFFORDABILITY AND SUSTAINABLE HOUSING

As Newark continues to grow the Baraka administration is committed to ensuring that all residents have access to decent and affordable housing. The Office of Affordable Housing will lead the Mayor’s initiative to create and preserve affordable homes and apartments in all of the city’s neighborhoods. The office will also coordinate the implementation and oversee the enforcement of the city’s Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance.

To do business with the City of Newark, you must have a State of New Jersey Business Registration Certificate. You can register your business online with the State HERE.

Contracts with the City of Newark to provide goods and/or services are available by Bid, RFP or RFQ.
